The difference between MOTs and servicing

MOTs and vehicle servicing can be a daunting prospect for drivers, as sometimes the size of the bill and the repairs required can feel like a nasty surprise. Knowing the differences between what is checked in a service and an MOT can help vehicle owners feel more confident and prepared.

MOT inspections vs a service

Any car or van over three years old requires an annual MOT test. A brand new vehicle doesn’t require a test until its third anniversary of registration.

When it’s time to get a test, there are several components of the vehicle that are inspected. These include:

• Brakes
• Lights
• Steering
• Horn
• Mirrors and windows
• Fuel system
• Bodywork
• Tyres

The legal minimum tread depth for tyres to be considered roadworthy is 1.6mm, with no cuts or bulges. It’s important not to wait until your MOT for a tyre inspection though – tyres should be checked on a monthly basis for any signs of uneven wear or damage, as this can deem them unsafe to drive on. It’s easy to check your tyre tread depth at home – just take a 20p coin and insert it into the main grooves of the tyre. If the outer band of the coin is visible, then it’s time to get your tyres changed.

Regularly servicing your vehicle is highly recommended to keep it running efficiently. Servicing can include filter replacements, oil change, fluid top ups and checks, testing the battery condition and inspection of the suspension components. The level of checks will depend on whether the vehicle requires an interim service or a full service.

Although every driver is aware that these checks need to be done annually, it’s not always possible to predict what may need repairing which can make budgeting more of a challenge. However, there are some simple checks you can do yourself at home to help reduce your maintenance bills.

Easy at home checks

• Check that your front and rear wipers are working correctly.
• Check your horn.
• Test your front and rear lights, including your reverse and brake lights. Ask someone to help you check your rear lights.
