Top tyre tips for hot weather

The current hot weather might feel like a welcome change from the usual Great British summertime, but it can be harmful to your tyres. Here’s how to keep an eye on them when the temperature rises.
High temperatures outside can cause the air inside your tyres to also heat up. This becomes problematic because it increases the pressure, which can compromise the tyre structure. When the tyre structure changes – in this case by overinflating – this can cause premature wear and damage such as cracks or tears.
Grip can also be impacted, as this becomes weaker due to degradation of the rubber, meaning braking distances can increase.
How do I know if my tyres are overheating?
Tyres naturally generate heat when they are travelling, but if your tyres feel hot to the touch even when the vehicle has been stationary, this is a clear sign they could be overheating. Take particular care if you’re travelling long distances – it’s a good idea to take regular breaks, let your tyres cool down and then resume your journey.
When do I need to check my tyre pressure?
It’s best to check your tyre pressure on a weekly basis during a heatwave. It’s important to do this when the tyres haven’t been driven on for several hours to avoid underinflation. This can happen if the tyres are warm through travelling, because the pressure gauge may think there is more pressure in the tyre than may be true, and subsequently they won’t be inflated to the correct pressure.
How do I find out my vehicle’s tyre pressure?
You can find your vehicle’s recommended tyre pressures in your handbook or on the inside of your car door. The required pressures will vary depending on the load you are carrying – so ensure you are applying the correct pressure for the current load.
